THESIS....

JAN McCREDIE

Introduction - Project Housing in the North West of Sydney (1968)

This thesis was inspired by observing the development trends in Winston Hills Estate, particularly the rapid transformation of farmland into urban sprawl. In response, the study examined project homes as a means to address the associated design and environmental challenges. The Sydney Region Outline Plan by the State Planning Authority provided context for the anticipated growth, especially in the north-western suburbs, including the proposed new city at Rouse Hill-Maraylya. The author argues that simply criticising suburban sprawl is unproductive; given ongoing demand, it is vital to seek alternatives that improve design outcomes. Focusing on project homes, which form the bulk of new development, the thesis analyses three estates—Winston Hills, Roxborough Park, and Kingsdene—comparing their housing, road layouts, and environments. A questionnaire was also used to identify public preferences.

This thesis is one of four volumes, Volume 2 relating to Kingsdene Estate.
