World War One – Parramatta Soldier – Alexander Finlayson

Alexander was single, working as a butcher. Alexander and his family were living at Church Street, Parramatta, they were from a Presbyterian faith. He had been a member of the Cadet Lancers in Parramatta and was 30 years old when he enlisted at Liverpool on 4th July, 1915, being his father, William, his next of kin.

He embarked in Sydney on board of the HMAT “Beltana”, A72, on 9th November, 1915 with the 30th Infantry Battalion, and on 18th March 1916 he was transferred to 4th Australian Field Butchery and on 2nd May, 1916 he arrived at the Main Supply Depot at Port Said. On 6th June, 1916, he embarked to join the B.E.F and began active service in France. Later on 1st April, 1917, he was promoted to Corporal. He spent a lot of time in hospital suffering from Venereal Disease, and was returned to Australia per “Zealandia”, arriving home on the 1st July, 1919.
