World War One – Parramatta Soldiers – Driver George Richerby Mallinson

Driver Mallinson was born at Trongate Street, Granville, New South Wales. He was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Mallinson and his elder brother Private James Edward Mallinson (service number 6792) was killed in action in the Great War. Prior to enlistment he was an apprentice at Carriage Building, Clyde Engineering Works, Granville. He was married to Louisa May, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. McDeed of Mount Druitt. He also had served as a cadet for 2 years. At the age of 21, he enlisted in to Australian Imperial Forces, 5 Field Artillery Brigade on 14 July 1915 at Liverpool. He embarked from Sydney aboard the HMAT Bulla A45 on 25 November 1915.

He disembarked at Suez, Egypt on 21 December 1915 and proceeded to join the Military Expeditionary Force. On 10 March, 1916, he was transferred to the 20 Battery at the Moascar camp. Joining the British Expeditionary Force at Alexandria, Egypt, he set sail to Marseille, France where he he was taken on strength and transferred to the 22 Field Artillery Brigade. On 27 January 1917, he was taken on strength and transferred to the 5 Field Artillery Brigade 13 Battery in France in the field. From 19 July to 27 August 1917, he fell ill and was hospitalised for 40 days. After he was discharged from the hospital, he returned to service. On 30 November 1917, he was awarded a 1 Anzac Military Medal for his gallant services on the field. He was returned to Australia per HMAT Runic on 24 April 1919.
