The Markets Commission Act of 1839 comes into effect. |
1841 |
The Governor approves the establishment of a market at Parramatta. |
1842 |
An Act for the Government of New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land is passed, introducing a system of compulsory district councils with powers for making by-laws. |
1843 |
The Parramatta District Council is proclaimed on the 24th August. |
1858 |
The Municipalities Act is introduced, enabling groups of at least fifty householders to petition for a municipality to be created. |
1861 |
Parramatta is incorporated as a municipality on the 27th November. There are four wards: Marsden, Anderson, Forrest and Gore. |
1862 |
John Williams is elected first mayor of Parramatta on the 2nd January, holding office for a period of six weeks. James Byrnes is elected second mayor of Parramatta in February. |
1866 |
Control of the Parramatta Markets is transferred to the Parramatta Municipal Council. |
1867 |
The second Municipalities Act is introduced and Parramatta becomes a borough as it meets the criteria under the act of being an area with a population of not less than 1000. |
1873 |
The Municipalities Lighting Act is introduced, allowing the council to levy rates for gas lighting and the construction and maintenance of works. In 1872, Parramatta Council had purchased gas for street lighting from the Parramatta Gas Lighting company. |
1873 |
First free municipal library is opened in Parramatta, one of the earliest libraries of its kind in NSW. |
1878 |
Council markets cease to operate. |
1879 |
Parramatta Town Hall Act is introduced, permitting the council to build a Town Hall on the old market site. |
1883 |
Parramatta Town Hall is completed and opened in August. |
1905 |
The Local Government (Shires) Act is introduced, which abolishes the previous distinction between a municipality and a borough. All Councils became municipalities. |
1914 |
Electric Street Lighting to be introduced in Parramatta. |
1919 |
The Local Government Act is introduced, with a system of councils and city councils, and areas divided into wards for elections. |
1938 |
The municipality of Parramatta is proclaimed a city on the 27th October. |
1945 |
Town planning provisions are inserted into the Local Government Act 1919, giving councils the ability to prepare town planning schemes. |
1948 |
The Local Government (Areas) Act is introduced and Parramatta City Council amalgamates with Dundas, Ermington, Rydalmere and Granville Councils. |
1957 |
A portion of Westmead is amalgamated from Shire of Blacktown into City of Parramatta. |
1959 |
A further portion of Westmead is amalgamated from Shire of Blacktown into City of Parramatta. |
1961 |
Centenary year of council. |
1972 |
Portions of Old Toongabbie, Wentworthville, Pendle Hill, Toongabbie and Winston Hills amalgamated from Shire of Blacktown into City of Parramatta. |
1988 |
The position of Mayor of the City was elevated to that of Lord Mayor by Her Majesty the Queen. |
2011 |
Sesquicentennial year of council. |
2021 |
160 years of Local Government in Parramatta. |
