History.

Model Farms Reserve is part of the upper catchment of creek formed gully that runs through Sandstone exposed soils to meet with the larger Toongabbie Creek which supports the permanent water flow used by the Burramatta clan of First Australians.  The reserve links directly with Burramatta clans area but has a similar nature to the Hills District lands used by the Bidji clan.

The location of the Burramatta and Bidji clans within the Sydney basin are illustrated on the following map.

Aboriginal Groups

Locations of Aboriginal groups in the Sydney area, based on a map by J Goodrum in Mulvaney, D J & White, J Peter 1987, Australians to 1788, Fairfax, Syme & Weldon Associates, Broadway, NSW, Australia, p. 345.

Just within the Government Domain; Model Farms Reserve reminds of the orchards, grazing farms and cropping lands, set up to provide a permanent food source to the fragile but growing colony of English Settlers.   The name Model Farms came into use once the Government Domain was dismantled and a series of small farms was set up throughout the Winston Hills district once serviced by the Model Farms railway platform; a stop on Windsor Road as part of the Rogans Hill railway.   Many areas within Model Farms Reserve still contain remnants of past farming practice.

Vegetation.

Model Farms Reserve contains transitioning soils between Wianamatta Shale and Sydney Sandstone allowing the Endangered Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest to persist with the more common Sydney Enriched Sandstone Moist Forest.   Vegetation species are listed below and form the structure of the native habitat, essential for the survival of the local native animal populations.
