1822-1922 Centenary Re-Union of the Royal Agricultural Society NSW
1922 was the Centenary of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW. The Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales was founded on 5 July 1822, when a group of Sydney's leading citizens formed the Agricultural Society of NSW, and is "a not-for-profit organisation committed to supporting agricultural development and rural communities in Australia." The society has been responsible for holding the Sydney Royal Easter Show since 1823.
Eleven officers were elected and the Society staged its first Show at Parramatta in 1823. Then returning in 1834 due to the pressure of drought and economic depression, and re-formed in 1857 under the name of the ‘Cumberland Agricultural Society.’ In 1859 the Society renamed itself the Agricultural Society of NSW. The Society's Shows, known at the time as Exhibitions, were held at Parramatta until 1868 and subsequently moved to Prince Alfred Park. Over the years these shows have become famously known as the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
The City of Parramatta Archives collection holds historical records created by or for the City of Parramatta Council and its precursors. With our earliest record dating from 1846, the Council Archives is an invaluable resource of unique records that form the corporate memory of our city and neighbourhoods. The Council Archives hold a diverse collection of material ranging from meeting minutes, annual reports, correspondence and property records to maps, photographs and film footage.
We have the good fortune to hold the Centenary Re-Union of 1922 celebration pamphlet and Correspondence and Minutes of Meetings for Centenary Celebrations of the Royal Agricultural Society. We have included some of the documents below for you to read. They give a good snapshot of the people in leadership roles in various organisation in Parramatta in the early 1920's.
